Strengthening DHS to achieve SDG 3: from national level to district health level

The College of Health Systems Management, Naresuan University (NUCHSM) together with Saithong Watthana Hospital, Kamphaengphet organized the “Workshop on Strategic Planning of Sai Thong Watthana District 2018” aimed at developing the District Health System (DHS) from the National level to the local district health systems for the achievement of the health goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3): “Good Health and Well-Being”.

Mr. Surachai Mekphat, the Chief District Officer of Sai Thong Watthana District, Kamphaengphet honored the event with his presence and presided over the opening ceremonies of the workshop. The workshop was held at the meeting room of Sai Thong Watthana Hospital, Kamphaengphet Province on April 23 and 24, 2018.

The workshop on strategic planning targeted to initiate and develop a district level strategic plan, which involves different organizations in Sai Thong Watthana District, to help Sai Thong Watthana to develop and improve its health management system with the participation of its network partners. During the workshop, Sai Thong Watthana District and its partners shared and exchanged ideas with the other organizations on how to effectively manage obesity and prevent chronic disease. The workshop also provided a learning platform for Sai thong Watthana and its partners to develop a research project in their area to develop and improve their District health system management in the achievement of the health goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3).

Asst. Prof. Dr. Phudit Tejativaddhana, Acting Director of the College of Health Systems Management, Naresuan University and the Consultant of DHS StarUp Project, provided the much-needed lecture to the participants of the said workshop. Dr. Phudit talked about “Thai Health 2017 and Its Agenda for the Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3): Where is Thailand?”. Dr. Phudit presented the transition of health goals from MDGs to SDGs and the status of Thailand in terms of its actions and accomplishments for the achievement of the SDG 3 which is “to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”.

Also present during the workshop were Dr. Jirarat Ruetrakul, Lecturer, Department of Nursing and Professional Development; Ms. Kamonroj Wongchanhan, Lecturer, Department of Nursing and Professional Development and academic advisor of Sai Thong Watthana District; Mr. Surachai Mekphat, Chief District Officer of Sai Thong Watthana, Mr. Sanya Maihom, District Health Officer, Sai Thong Watthana District.

More than 50 people joined and participated in the 2-day workshop. The participants were composed of the district health system management of Sai Thong Watthana District, chief executive of the Sub-district Administrative Organization (SAO), school directors, head of the district health volunteers, and health service network in Sai Thong Watthana District, Kamphaengphet.

The workshop on strategic planning was a part of the DHS StartUp research project and is being conducted for public relations and awareness to promote the effective district health system management. The DHS StartUp project, which aims to promote “sustainability of health and well-being for Thais”, is supported and funded by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation.
